 The infamous bandit Tiburcio Vasquez was hung in San Jose, California, on March 19, 1875, 147 years ago.

From Sonoma to Los Angeles, he killed, robbed, and stole cattle while making four attempts to escape from San Quentin jail. Vasquez stated he stood out for the rights of Mexican-Americans.

He played the guitar well, was personable, and could dance well. Despite having all of these things, he ultimately perished like outlaws did back then! At the time of his death, he was 39 years old.

Tiburcio Vásquez is still in the news today. Some Mexican-Americans see him as a hero for his defiance of what he perceived to be unfair laws and prejudice. Some people think of him as a colourful outlaw. Many people, mainly Mexican Americans, still go to Vásquez's grave in the Santa Clara Mission Cemetery in Santa Clara, California, to pay their respects. The Bay Area is home to numerous Health Centers that bear his name.
