Black Bart, also known as Charles Earl Boles (1829–1888), was an infamous stagecoach robber in California in the 1870s and 1880s. Black Bart, an Englishman by birth, maintained a gentlemanly demeanour throughout his criminal career.
He gained notoriety for never using force during robberies and for leaving his own poems at the scenes of his crimes.

Black Bart was eventually apprehended and found guilty of armed robbery, but only served four years of his sentence before being let off on the condition that he behaved well.
