war against pollution

A Belgian NGO is using human hair clippings to absorb air pollution.

The Hair Recycle Project is led by Ding Ding, a Belgian non-profit organization that develops schemes to put waste products to work.ooo

The project collects human hair clippings from hairdressers around the country and feeds them into a machine that creates matte squares from them.  They will be used to absorb oil and other hydrocarbons that pollute the environment.  They can also be shaped into bio-composite bags

These mats can be placed in drains to absorb pollutants before the water reaches the river.  They can also be used to deal with pollution problems caused by floods and to clean up oil spills.

Scientists say that one kilogram of hair can absorb seven to eight liters of oil and hydrocarbons.
